Government Strengthens STC With New Buses

Government has given a new lease of life to the nearly defunct State Transport Company STC by providing them with new buses to begin efficient transport services across the country.

President John Mahama, inaugurated the first batch of fifty (50) Scania buses at a brief ceremony in Accra.

The new set of buses come as a result of an MOU signed between the government of Ghana and Sweden's leading manufacturing company Scania.

President Mahama NDC led government believes the State Owned Company has a lot of potential to compete with the Private sector.

The State Transport Company STC now Intercity STC is no doubt a household name because of its reliable and efficient services within and outside the country in the past.

With time the fortunes of the company dwindled which saw most of its buses off the road.

The NDC government with its policy to revive all companies built under Dr Kwame Nkrumah's regime took steps to revive the ailing transport company.

While, on a state visit to Sweden, President Mahama, signed an agreement with the world’s leading vehicle manufacturing company Scania Group to provide Coaches for both the Intercity STC and the BRT system.

The new buses will use the services routes of the old STC which include Accra-Abidjan, Abidjan -Lone and Cotonou-Abidjan.

The Coaches also have Wifi services, charging systems, washrooms, fridges, coffee dispensers and television to make traveling exciting. They are also fitted with CCTV cameras to provide safety.

Customers will enjoy free snacks and water. Samuel Nuamah Donkor, is the Managing Director of the Intercity STC.

He said in order to make gains, the board has decided to renovate all its bus terminals across the country into multipurpose modern terminals to allow other Bus companies to access it on commercial buses.

According to Mr Donkor, this has the potential to generate millions of cedis to the company.

There are also moves to re-introduce the Parcels services.

President Mahama, said government will ensure that Intercity STC recaptures its glorious days.

He said as a social democratic government, it believes that the Public sector can work effectively on its own balance sheet without being a liability to the state.

President Mahama, tasked the workers to take very good care of the coaches by ensuring routine maintenance to enable it to operate to yield the needed revenue for expansion.

He promised that depending on how well the new coaches are managed, government will sign up for more buses.

President Mahama, took a ride on the Scania Coach which was driven by a driver neatly dressed in a khaki uniform. The stewardesses on the bus wear green and yellow skirt suits and dresses.
